Dirty Dash registration opens

The popular Dirty Dash opened registration today for the 2013 “race” to be held at Riverside State Park on July 13.

Loyalty registration, which runs until Jan. 30, costs only $35. After that the price to sign up steadily rises the closer we get to the event.

“Resolve to make 2013 your dirtiest yet and we guarantee to make that happen for you in one unforgettable morning of feasting on filth, groveling through grime, delighting in dirt, and wallowing in mud rather than self-pity,” a news release from Dirty Dash said.

Fools float the river for 20th straight New Year

Fools float the river for 20th straight New Year

How did you spend your New Year's Day? Napping away a hangover on the couch, pretending to watch football?

That kind of afternoon sounds foolish to the group of rafters who floated the Spokane River on Tuesday. The Northwest Whitewater Association celebrated the 20th Annual Only Fools Float the River on the First the only way they knew how – by eschewing a day at home and getting onto the water despite the air being only 22 degrees when they launched.

“If you're a boater, you take every chance to get on the water,” Bruce Bernhardt said.

More than 30 people attended the event with more than 20 boats on the water.

“This is more exciting” than watching football, said Pat Keegan before launching.

Thousands of unused bullets found on road

Thousands of unused bullets found on road

Thousands of bullets lined the side of a busy Coeur d'Alene street Friday afternoon - but this wasn't any crime scene.

According to Coeur d'Alene Police, a white truck spilled a case of unused bullets along 4th Street from Locust Street, all the way to the I-90 on ramp around noon.

So many bullets were spilled that police were called to the scene to help clean up. Some bystanders were trying to collect the thousands of live 9mm rounds left in the road.

Police speculate that since the truck was headed east, the driver may have been going to go hunting.

Those who frequent Q'emiln Park should swim there now before it's too late. Labor Day, Sept. 3, will be the last day Q'emiln Park has lifeguards on duty.

However the beach swimming area will remain open after Labor Day until the dam at the park is opened by Avista. Water levels will determine when the dam is reopened.

The city of Post Falls urges parents to be aware that although the beach will remain open, they should be with their children if they decide to go swimming at the park past Labor Day.

Pend d'Oreille Winery Offers Refillable Magnums

Pend d'Oreille Winery Offers Refillable Magnums

Fill 'er up, please!

On a recent visit to Sandpoint, Idaho it was discovered that Pend d'Oreille Winery has a magic spigot from which a never-ending flow of wine pours. That may be a tad-bit dramatic... yet they still have an awesome offer of refillable magnums of wine.

The idea came from co-proprietor Julie Meyer, who was tired of seeing empty bottles of wine go to waste (there is no market for recycled glass in Sandpoint, so the city is forced to reintegrate the glass into solid waste for disposal at a landfill in Eastern Oregon).

The 1.5 litre bottles, or more affectionately known as "Magnums" by wine-os, can be purchased for $27 at first. Then, a refill only costs $17.50.

Denise Alveari, the winery's PR person, says Pend d'Oreille is the first in Idaho - if not the Northwest - to do this.

The winery offers refills of their house Bistro Rouge Red Table Wine or a white wine, which they happened to be out of when I was in town.

Department of Interior Recommends Idaho Backcountry for Congressional Protection

Department of Interior Recommends Idaho Backcountry for Congressional Protection

A new report suggests 18 backcountry areas that are recommended to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar for congressional protection.

At this point it’s only a preliminary list that will be used to collection local support for the foundation of a bipartisan public lands bill that they hope to pass through Congress.

The list was compiled by Deputy Secretary David J. Hayes and BLM director Bob Abbey based on input from congress, state and city officials and interested parties.

"The backcountry areas we identify in this report are by no means the only public lands that may deserve protection by Congress, but this preliminary list of possibilities shows that there is a compelling case for bipartisan legislative action to conserve lands for recreation, protection, and enjoyment," said deputy secretary David J. Hayes.

Locations from Washington, Idaho and Montana made the list. They’re not exactly localized near you, but if you find yourself traveling for vacation, check them out.
