Kootenai search and rescue looking for helpers | News
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department is looking for volunteers for their Search and Rescue Unit.
Volunteers could be called to action any day of the year, around the clock. They help mostly with searches in backcountry or urban environments.
Those that do have backcountry experience are encouraged to apply. Other duties could include base operations, communications, food service and field search. The department will provide training for each field.
There are also specialty areas that can be applied for, such as K-9 handlers, trackers, mounted (equine), ATV and Snowmobile Operators. Generally in these areas the person will provide their own equipment and be certified. These certifications must also be maintained.
The department says these positions can be very rewarding, but also very demanding and require a large commitment.
If you think you are up for the challenge, call Sgt. Ryan Higgins, Dep. Jeff Burns or Dep. Will Klinkefus at 446-2250 or 215-0221. For application materials call Marcia Heglie at 446-1300 during business hours.
