Texting while driving ban a step closer to reality in Idaho | News
Title (Max 100 Characters)
Drivers in Idaho are a step closer to facing fines for texting while driving. House lawmakers voted 53-17 today to ban drivers from using smartphones and other hand-held devices to send texts.
At least 35 states, including Washington, already have bans in place, but it's been a hard road to get it passed in Idaho. Idaho's measure would create an $85 fine. And it would be a non-moving traffic infraction that wouldn't cost points on your license.
Rep. Julie Ellsworth, Boise, says approving the plan sends a strong message from state leaders. Rep. Erik Simpson, Idaho Falls, opposed the measure, questioning its enforce-ability.
The Senate has approved the plan but will need to sign off on amendments.
