Cupcake workshop helps North Idaho College sports

Cupcake workshop helps North Idaho College sports

It’s time to put the final layer of frosting on local cupcake coverage. Before we do, you’re going to need the skills to make your cupcakes beautiful in the comforts of your home.

That’s why there’s a local decorating workshop with Baltimore, Maryland's Charm City Cupcakes next week to help you out.

Here’s the left field kicker. The workshop is also a fundraiser for North Idaho College’s Athletics Department and during our conversation with the athletics director, Al Williams, he made his pitch for cupcakes and how it all comes back to sports.

Q: Why cupcakes?

A: During one of my travels, I went to Charm City Cupcakes. I was talking to the owner... They’re the official cupcakes of the Baltimore Ravens. ... Sports is kind of a neat thing they took on. A player with the Ravens like their cupcakes.

Highway to Wallace's Accordion Festival

This is your friendly reminder that the annual Accordion Festival is happening in less than three months. Do what you need to do to free up your calendar because it's two days of accordion madness from August 10th to the 11th.

If you're worried about attending Seafair in Seattle, don't worry, that's happening the week prior so if you plan everything out right, you can attend Seafair and Wallace's Accordion Festival all in the same month.

For your monthly dosage of accordion, here's another version of Duckmandu's Highway to Hell. He's performing with an entire army of accordionist.

If that doesn't get you into the mood for accordions, we don't know what will.

Duckmandu, also known as Aaron Seeman, is performing at the festival on August 11th at 7 p.m.

Breakfast Fundraiser with Kelly Graves

Breakfast Fundraiser with Kelly Graves

The Spokane Youth Sports Association (SYSA) is pleased to announce their upcoming "Breakfast with a Side of Sportsmanship" fundraising event on Thursday, June 7 at 7:30 am.  The breakfast will be held at the SYSA Bingo Hall on 2230 E. Sprague.

A minimum contribution of $100 is requested, but all gifts are welcome.  This year’s breakfast host is 700 ESPN's Rick Lukens and the featured speaker is Gonzaga Women's Basketball Coach, Kelly Graves.

Graves has turned the GU women’s basketball team into one of the elite programs in the nation in his 11 years at the helm.  He led GU to their unprecedented seventh-straight West Coast Conference Championship and fourth WCC Tournament Title in the last five yeaers.  He has also taken the Lady Zags to the Sweet Sixteen for the past three years and to the Elite Eight once.

SYSA has over 8000 youths participating in sports and camps throughout the year.  Over 600 youths were able to participate because of the generous support from the community totaling more than $40,000 to the SYSA Scholarship fund in 2011!

Hello, Dolly and Ring of Fire coming to Coeur d'Alene

The summer line up for Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre is out for all to see. If you’re a fan of musical theatre, you’ll love the season because it’s a mix of classics and even newer productions.

Ellen Travolta will be playing the part of Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly! Travolta’s real life husband will be featured in the production as well as Horace Vandergelder who is the nemesis/love interest for Dolly. Could be cute. That opens in June.

The above video is from the 1969 film of Hello, Dolly! We couldn’t resist the song “Put On Your Sunday Clothes”.

For July, it’s a little hotter so of course Ring of Fire fits in nicely there. It’s similar to the movie that came out about Johnny Cash, but it’s in musical form.

They’re calling it a jukebox style musical, which was an unknown term to us but we looked it up. Apparently it’s when the performance repertoire is made up of previously released songs. That’s what you’ll expect from that show.

Next on the list, they’re doing Spamalot and there was much rejoicing. Yay.

Job fair planned for Wednesday at Real Life Ministries

There's a hope for those unemployed in Kootenai County. A job fair, hailed as the largest in the county, is being held tomorrow morning at Real Life Ministries, located at 1866 N. Cecil Road in Post Falls.

The event announcement doesn't say what employers will be present looking to hire, but it could be a great opportunity to find a new job. The job fair is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There's also a neat Facebook page for Spokane and Coeur d'Alene Jobs. It's hand-curated by somebody and not just a spam of job openings. Might help? Let us know if you find a job during any of these avenues.

T-Minus Four Months Until Accordion Festival 2012

Everyone! Take out your day planners and flip ahead to August. Now grab the nearest pen or pencil and scribble in the following item: “Accordion Festival 2012”. It’s the second weekend of August and we can barely contain ourselves.

Last year was a hoot with the parade of accordions and the bars filled with accordionists playing through the night. This year should not disappoint.

One of the headlining performers for Saturday night’s concert is a actually the most amazing thing you’ll ever seen.

Excuse us as we switch into first person mode. I saw Duckmandu in 2008 in Spokane during an event called “Monsters of Accordion”. He’s kind of a monster, like scary awesome. He’s playing that Saturday and he does mostly accordion covers of classical songs and punk rock. He has an album dedicated to the Dead Kennedy’s.
