A wild ride through the Coeur d'Alene area early this morning ended with a man in jail and his car crashed.
At about 1 a.m. Friday, a Kootenai County Sheriff's deputy attempted to execute a traffic stop for a stop sign violation on a black Honda Civic at Lacey Avenue and Government Way in Hayden. The driver eventually stopped for the deputy, but as the officer approached, the driver sped away, according to a news release from the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department.
A short pursue ensued, but the deputy discontinued it “due to the fleeing car's excessive speeds" as well as poor weather conditions. The deputy was able to infer that the driver was Jared L. Salamina, 22, of Athol, “based on the driver's actions, and research of the license plate.”
The sheriff's office received an anonymous tip from a caller claiming to have picked up Salamina where he had allegedly crashed his vehicle near the Cd'A Airport. The caller also said that Salamina's parents were going to take him to the hospital.
The wrecked car was located by deputies.
“It had driven through an airport fence and crashed into a fuel pump depot, causing about $40,000 damage and spilling and/or contaminating about 200 gallons of aviation fuel,” according to the news release.
“Meanwhile, deputies were able to locate Jared and his mother driving south on Highway 95 near the Garwood area,” the news release read. “They stopped the vehicle and detained Jared.”
Salamina was taken to the Kootenai Medical Center for treatment of his injuries and later taken to the Kootenai County Jail.
Salamina was charged with allegedly leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report the crash and reckless driving – all misdemeanors. “Charges for felony eluding are pending as well as probation violation charges, as Jared is currently on Felony probation for previous drug charges.”
UPDATE: The Kootenai County Sheriff's Department said that only one gallon was spilled, and that most of the damage involved property owned by Resort Aviation.
"As of 12:30 p.m., Jared Salamina has been charged with one count of probation violation - which has no bond, in addition to the three other misdemeanor crimes."
