Coeur d'Alene Police Will Reduce Abandoned Vehicle Numbers by Winter Season

Coeur d’Alene Police are setting a November 14th deadline and goal to reduce the number of abandoned vehicles on the streets. They’re worried about the heavy snow predictions for this winter season. Not only are abandoned vehicles an eye sore, but they can cause traffic problems for emergency services.

Vehicle owners who do not remove their vehicles face a minimum of $125 in towing fines with other city/state code violations added on.

Vehicles are first tagged for 48 hour removal. If they’re still there after two days, they’re towed. Vehicle owners are notified prior to towing.

Give Blood, Get Stuff

Give Blood, Get Stuff

The Inland Northwest Blood Center is improving the blood supply and making the process easier for donors.

To say thanks to donors, INBC instituted the “Hero in Me” Donor Rewards Program beginning in January of 2012. This will be replacing the current Four Seasons Club and Full Circle Programs but is loaded with benefits to loyal blood donors.

With the new program, you have an online connection to the Inland Northwest Blood Center where you can see your donation history, make and review appointments, and see the points you’ve earned.

Great Blue Heron Boosted From CdA Roost

Late last week someone stole a statue of a Great Blue Heron that was placed as part of a public art program earlier this year in downtown Coeur d'Alene.

Warming Centers Prepared to Open Just in Case

The temperature isn’t quite low enough yet, but Coeur d’Alene’s warming center is still preparing to open for the season in case the temperatures drop.

Fresh Start executive director, Howard Martinson, just notified media outlets today that they’re ready.

When the overnight temperature is expected to drop to or below 20 degrees, the Fresh Start Emergency Warming Center, located at 1524 E. Sherman Ave, opens their doors for the night with a warm atmosphere for their guests. An overnight stay includes: hot coffee, food, showers, laundry, telephone and internet access and bedrolls.

This is their four winter of operation. Last winter they were open thirty nights and had about 825 overnight guests stay with them.

Local Artists Make Fashion Out of Trash

Local Artists Make Fashion Out of Trash

For one night this month, North Idaho was too sexy for Milan, New York and Japan. The Idaho Panhandle got their share of eco-friendly attire on Friday, October 14th, during a sold-out fashion show. The runway photos are in.

Every year, Kootenai Environmental Alliance hosts Junk2Funk, a collection of runway fashion created from trash and recycled materials.

Local artists used a menagerie of materials including candy wrappers, paper bags and used bike tubes.

Photo Gallery: That might not sound like fashion, but take a look at the photos from the event and you’ll think otherwise.
