Grant Will Help Evaluate Drinking Water in Kootenai County

The future of drinking water in Kootenai County may be shaped by a new drinking water facility plan thanks to grant funds.

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality awarded Hayden Lake-based district, Alpine Meadows Water and Sewer $20,625. The funds will also prepare a environmental information document.

In Brief: Environmental Group Is Collecting Signatures to Save Trees

Nearly 500 trees along the Rosenberry Drive Levee face removal because they violate the Corps of Engineers vegetation policy.

A petition created by Kootenai Environmental Alliance is gathering signatures that oppose the removal saying the mature trees are not a danger to flood control and they provide the city with significant and irreplaceable value.

They need nearly 500 signatures to reach their goal of 3,000 online. Overall, they’re hoping to reach a goal of 5,000 signatures online and on paper to present a valid case to the Corp to reconsider the policy. If you haven’t already, you can sign it here.

Feds Start Foreclosure Proceedings on Rep. Phil Hart's Athol Home

Feds Start Foreclosure Proceedings on Rep. Phil Hart's Athol Home

Idaho Rep. Phil hart is now facing foreclosure on his Athol, Idaho home after years of refusing to pay taxes.  He's been fighting federal and state governments for years, saying income taxes are unconstitutional.  The federal government says he owes nearly $550,000 in taxes and fees, and they want to use the sale of his home to pay the debt.

Hart transferred the title of his property out of his name in an attempt to avoid the proceedings, which the U.S. Department of Justice called "fradulent".

The four-term legislator built the home with timber he took illegally from state land in the 1990s.

Broadband Agreement Will Increase Internet Speeds in Schools

Broadband Agreement Will Increase Internet Speeds in Schools

Idaho may have the slowest internet in the state, but soon schools in Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene will have faster internet speeds thanks to a long-term agreement with a local broadband provider.

Post Falls-based broadband company, FatBeam, will now deliver 2GB broadband services to the schools for about 7.5 years. It’s a more than $2 million contract that the school says will provide greater access to technology services.

“As staff and students become more and more dependent on technology in teaching and learning it becomes increasingly important that we provide a robust and reliable infrastructure”, said Jean Bengfort, IT Director of the Coeur d’Alene School District.
