Local dealership gives away new car to high school senior

A select group of high school seniors were on the edge of their seats on Wednesday afternoon as they waited to hear their name called in a drawing for a brand new car.

For the last 13 years Tom Addis Lake City Ford has been giving away a new car to a deserving graduate. The student is drawn randomly from a pool of students who are all in the top ten per cent of their class.

Students gathered at Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy on Wednesday to see if their name would be drawn for the 2013 Ford Fiesta. However, what was supposed to be an exciting moment ended up being anti-climatic when the winner, Brandon Penney of Lake City High School, wasn't in attendance.

Party sends one teen to the hospital

A weekend party sent one teen to the hospital after he lost consciousnesses and was later dragged off the property by his friends.

Kootenai County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a home on Danielle Rd. in Hayden after a caller reported seeing two young men drag another into an adjacent yard. Deputies found the 16 year old semi-conscious with a severe burn on his arm and suffering from hypothermia symptoms.

The teen had been dragged from the house next door, where a party that included underage drinking was going on while the homeowners were out of town. Juvenile attendants of the party said that the victim was drinking at the party when he passed out in the back yard. After trying to wake him with no success, the homeowner's son moved him closer to a fire pit to keep him warm.

Sandpoint artist featured at Art Spirit Gallery

Sandpoint artist featured at Art Spirit Gallery

The Art Spirit Gallery will be opening a show featuring Sandpoint artist Catherine Earle. The show will run through the month of June and features 30 new paintings.

Earle's work looks at subjects from nature, but her use of the medium and combinations of natural and jewel tones offers an ethereal tone to the work as well.  The Art Spirit Gallery describes her work as being "a snapshot in motion".

The artist presently resides in Sandpoint, but Earle began her formal education at Ecole Des Beaux Arts in France. She moved to the United States in 1997, where she continued her education focusing on watercolors before moving on to encaustic techniques. The influence of these mediums is easily seen in her paintings.

The show opens with an Opening Reception and ArtWalk on Friday, June 7th from 5-8pm. Earle will also give an informal painting demonstration in the gallery on Saturday, June 8th, from 1-4pm. The show will be at the gallery from June 7th through July  6th.

Nurse says she was fired for complaining about doc

A northern Idaho nurse is suing Kootenai Medical Center, saying she was fired last year in an act of retaliation against her for complaining about a doctor's erratic behavior.

The Coeur d'Alene Press reports Tamara N. Pilgrim filed the lawsuit in 1st District Court last week.

Pilgrim worked at Kootenai for more than a decade starting in 1998, in the neurology clinic.

She maintains problems began in 2009, with Dr. Robert W. Gilbert's arrival.

She said Gilbert's behavior progressed from disorganized to erratic, culminating in 2012 with threats against her and members of her family. Pilgrim said she was placed on leave, then fired inappropriately Nov. 29.

Gilbert, who wasn't available for comment, no longer works at the hospital, officials said.

The hospital declined comment on Pilgrim's lawsuit.

Safety tips for a safe drive on Memorial Day

Safety tips for a safe drive on Memorial Day

Many families take to the open road over Memorial Day to take advantage of the long weekend and to celebrate the unofficial start of summer. Idaho State Police wants to remind all drivers to remain safe.

Last year there were 129 crashes in Idaho with 81 injuries and two fatalities. Idaho State Police has provided these safety reminders which are great for both Idaho and Washington drivers:

Wear Your Seatbelts: Police in both Idaho and Washington will be strictly enforcing seat belt laws and drivers with children are reminded to make sure all children are in age appropriate safety seats and that children under 12 are in the back seat.

Designate a Driver: Nearly 30 people a day die in an alcohol related crash. Make sure to designate a driver before anyone in your party drinks.
