Hayden Lake student is state winner for Doodle 4 Google

A Hayden Lake student has been selected as the Idaho state winner in the sixth annual Doodle 4 Google competition. Doodle 4 Google is open to K-12 students across the U.S. to redesign the Google logo according to the theme "My Best Day Ever".

Natasha DiBiase is a third grader at Lake City Junior Academy and wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up. Her doodle is called "Becoming Veterinarian" and features a vet helping animals that spell out Google. DiBiase said she was inspired after her dog got sick.

"When we rescued my dog Satchmo from the shelter he was so sick that we thought he wouldn't live," DiBiase said, "Our veterinarian helped Satchmo get better. It made me want to be able to do the same someday."

DiBiase's doodle is one of the state winners selected from more than 130,000 students who submitted drawings this year nation wide. DiBiase's doodle will be displayed in a special exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History in New York at the end of May along with all 50 state winners.

Charges against former Idaho lawmaker dropped

A misdemeanor battery charged against a former northern Idaho lawmaker has been dismissed.

The Coeur d'Alene Press reports the case against former Republican state Sen. Mike Jorgenson was dismissed late last week ahead of a trial scheduled to start this week.

City of Coeur d'Alene chief criminal deputy attorney Wes Somerton says his review of witness statements, a 911 audio recording and security video raised doubt about whether an unlawful battery occurred.

The 64-year-old Jorgenson was arrested in February at his Hayden restaurant, The Copa, after an apparent scuffle with an employee.

The employee says Jorgenson grabbed him and threw him to the ground during a dispute about money.

Jorgenson's attorney says Jorgenson was leading the employee out of the restaurant by the "scruff of the neck" when their legs got tangled and they fell to the ground.

NIC looking to build 5,000 seat arena

North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene is looking to build a new arena that will benefit not just the school but all of Kootenai County.

The gym on the North Idaho College campus is over 60 years old.

"If you look at Christianson Gymnasium it's, we like to call it historic. That's the glass half full way to look at it," Mark Browning, vice president of communications and public relations at NIC, said.

The floor is being replaced but that won't change the fact that its basketball court is six feet too short and support pillars block the view from the stands.

"We lost a bid to host the national volleyball championship simply because we didn't have a facility that will house the event," Browning said.

Browning added there's definitely a need for a new arena, something the board of directors is looking into.

"Take a look, analyze it see if it's doable and if it is doable see what it will take," he said.

Girl Scouts asking for support during Idaho Gives

Girl Scouts of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho is hoping the region will jump on board and donate during the first ever Idaho Gives campaign.

Idaho Gives is a 24 hour giving campaign sponsored by the Idaho Nonprofit Center. The event gives donors the opportunity to give to any of the 531 participating non profits across Idaho. For every $10 donation made groups will be entered to win a Golden Ticket prize. The more donors that GSEWNI gets, the more chances they have to win prize money.

Groups have also been divided by size into three separate scoreboards. Each scoreboard carries an additional $5,000 worth of prize money that will be divided between the top five money raisers at the end of the day. Idaho Gives also features an Everybody Wins Award, this award takes a general pool of money and divides it by the percentage if the total raised. For example, if Girl Scouts raises one percent of the total for the entire campaign, then they receive one percent of the Everybody Wins Award.

Duncan attorney to defend Boston bombing suspect

Prominent death penalty lawyer Judy Clarke, who has been Joseph Duncan's defense attorney for several years, is joining the team representing the suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings.

The appointment of Clarke, based in San Diego, Calif., was approved Monday by U.S. Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler.

Bowler denied a request from Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's public defender to appoint a second death penalty lawyer. Bowler says Tsarnaev's lawyers could renew their motion to appoint another death penalty expert if Tsarnaev is indicted.

The 19-year-old Tsarnaev has been charged with using a weapon of mass destruction during the April 15 marathon. Three people were killed and more than 260 injured when two bombs exploded near the finish line.

In addition to Joseph Duncan, Clarke's clients have included Unabomber Ted Kaczynski; Susan Smith, who drowned her two children; and most recently Tucson, Ariz., shooter Jared Loughner. All received life sentences instead of the death penalty.

Kyle Petty kicks off fundraiser in Coeur d'Alene Saturday

The 19th annual Kyle Petty Ride Across America kicks off in Coeur d'Alene Saturday to help raise funds for chronically sick children.

The event started 19 years ago to raise money for Victory Junction a camp and medical facility started by the Petty family after Kyle's son passed away in 2000 in a racing accident.

Today it takes about $2,500 to send one kid to camp and one look at a long line of fans out to meet Petty and you'll find that might be something Spokane is ready to help out with.

On Friday morning Kyle Petty was up bright and early at Krispy Kreme; the doughnut chain has done a lot to help support his cause.

"We've had a ton of kids from this area come to camp because of Krispy Kreme," Petty explained. "They've raised millions of dollars for us, so we asked people to go out and buy a doughnut and get a cup of coffee in the morning. Nothing is better than a hot Krispy Kreme."

Victory Junction isn't just a camp; it's a place sick kids can go for fun and treatment.

"We have a full time doctor, full time nurses there, the camp goes year round, it's totally free to all the kids that come," Petty said.
