Host Families Needed for Student Exchange

Host Families Needed for Student Exchange

The Northwest International Student Exchange in Coeur d'Alene and Spokane is looking for host families for a group of students visiting in July from China.

The group of 30 students as well as chaperones and interpreters will be touring Coeur d'Alene July 3rd-15th. There are two groups visitng Spokane from July 4th-15th and July 15th-August 4th.

NISE Coeur d'Alene still needs about 15 hosts for the students, who are between the ages of 9 and 12. This trip offers the students a unique opportunity to learn about American culture and to flex their English skills.

“It's been hard finding homes,” said Caroline Clement, the Group Coordinator for NISE Coeur d'Alene. Clement thinks it might because the visit falls over the 4th of July and the typically busy holiday is deterring volunteers.

First Grader Wins Bike for Practicing Fire Safety

First Grader Wins Bike for Practicing Fire Safety

A first grader at Winton Elementary in Coeur d'Alene got a huge surprise today when the Fire Prevention Cooperative of North Idaho presented him with a brand new bike and helmet.

Daniel T. Valverde III was one of 500 students entered in a drawing for the bike after completing a special homework assignment for the Fire Prevention Cooperative. Following a school assembly on fire prevention the students were asked to go home and discuss fire prevention with their parents, create a fire plan and practice with a fire drill.

Once their parents signed a form saying they had done all those things as a family, the student's names were entered in the drawing. For Daniel, winning was extra special. His dad said that Daniel had recently given away his own bike to a neighbor because he thought his friend needed it more.

Coeur d'Alene adopts anti-discrimination ordinance

Coeur d'Alene has become the fifth city in Idaho to pass a law that bans discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

The City Council late Tuesday approved an anti-discrimination law by a 5-1 vote.

The ordinance protects people in areas of employment and public accommodations, such as restaurants and housing, by preventing discrimination solely based on "sexual orientation, gender identity and expression."

Opponents contended the rule discriminates against those with religious beliefs by forcing them to go against their conscience for the benefit of a select few.

Boise, Sandpoint, Ketchum and Moscow have already adopted similar rules.

The rule does not apply to churches or religious organizations or people who are renting a room in their home.

Reminder: Third Street boat launch closes June 1st

The City of Coeur d'Alene wants to give boaters one last reminder that the Third Street boat launch will be closing this Saturday, June 1st and will remain closed for the remainder of the season.

The closure is due to the construction being done on the west end of McEuen Field. The launch will be closed through September 30th.

In addition to the boat launch closure, Sherman Ave. is also closed as part of the Third Street improvement project. Despite concerns that Sherman will not be ready for Car d'Alene, the city wants to assure residents that it will be completed in time for the annual event.

N. Idaho man pleads guilty in 2012 shooting

Federal prosecutors say a Winchester man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the shooting death of his mother last summer.

In federal court Wednesday, 48-year-old Kenneth D. Broncheau pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Carol Haskell at their residence on the Nez Perce Indian Reservation.

Broncheau admitted to firing two shots from a rifle at his mother on June 21, with the first missing her and the second causing a fatal wound in her torso.

He then poured gasoline on the victim's body and set it afire before a neighbor stepped in and removed the gun from his hands.

He faces up to life in prison on the murder charge and is scheduled for sentencing on Aug. 19.
