Still Spring

Still Spring

A great start with a blustery turn for Tuesday.

Partly cloudy and cooler Wednesday and then a chance of showers and below average temps Thursday and Friday.

The weekend looks good for Father's Day, so make those picnic/golf plans and enjoy.

Man knocked unconscious, robbed on Centennial Trail

A man was knocked unconscious and robbed late Friday night on the Centennial Trail in Coeur d'Alene.

Around 10:45, 59-year-old David Dill was walking along the trail near Atlas Road when a man came up behind him on a bicycle and struck him on the head.

That man took Dill's money while he was unconscious.

Dill says he was knocked out for about 20 minutes before he was able to call 911. He was taken to Kootenai Medical Center with minor injuries.

Several deputies searched the Centennial Trail and surrounding areas, but were unable to locate a suspect.

The Kootenai County Sheriff' Office is still investigating this attack. They are also asking citizens to remain vigilant when using trails and to report any suspicious activity.

STEM Program Helps Parents With Children's Homework

STEM Program Helps Parents With Children's Homework

A new STEM project in Post Falls is creating tutorial videos to help Idaho parents crack the code when it comes to their children's math homework.

A recent STEM survey showed that 49 percent of parents in Kootenai County had trouble helping their kids with the math homework because of their own knowledge, or lack of knowledge, on the topics. Julie Amador, a curriculum and instruction professor at the University of Idaho is creating videos to make it easier for parents to help with homework.

The videos will be a tutorial on the new common core standards in math and science. They will focus on problem solving and modeling.

“Kids are in school six to seven hours a day, and the rest is spent with parents,” Amador explained, “The more parents understand math teaching, the more they'll know how to support their children.”

Local kids head to Capitol Hill for Children's Congress

Two local students have been selected to participate in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Children's Congress this summer. 150 kids with Type 1 diabetes will be sharing their stories with Congress, asking them to continue support of research for a cure.

“I think we are close to a cure! My family and I are doing our part for a cure, but we can't do it alone,” wrote 10 year old Carson Magee in his letter to Congress. “We need your help Congress! Please support diabetes research issues and renew the Special Diabetes Program for me, my brother, and all my friends with T1D and other autoimmune diseases.”

Carson was diagnosed with T1D at the age of seven, when a blood test showed his blood sugar levels to be over 400, the normal range is between 70 and 130. Carson spent five days in the hospital and by the time he left he was pricking his fingers and giving himself insulin shots. His mom, Fondra, says it was a huge learning curve for their family.

Host Families Needed for Student Exchange

Host Families Needed for Student Exchange

The Northwest International Student Exchange in Coeur d'Alene and Spokane is looking for host families for a group of students visiting in July from China.

The group of 30 students as well as chaperones and interpreters will be touring Coeur d'Alene July 3rd-15th. There are two groups visitng Spokane from July 4th-15th and July 15th-August 4th.

NISE Coeur d'Alene still needs about 15 hosts for the students, who are between the ages of 9 and 12. This trip offers the students a unique opportunity to learn about American culture and to flex their English skills.

“It's been hard finding homes,” said Caroline Clement, the Group Coordinator for NISE Coeur d'Alene. Clement thinks it might because the visit falls over the 4th of July and the typically busy holiday is deterring volunteers.
